When I had my first child 17 years ago, I thought that I had a pretty good understanding of infant nutrition. In the postpartum period, I read all the popular books, trying my best to optimize my son’s health.   I was committed to providing him with organic baby foods and limiting fast foods and too much processed sugar.   I had many “discussions” with my well-meaning family members about how I was choosing to feed my son.   While I feel like I made a good start, slowly however, as our second son was born and life became more hectic, more and more convenience food crept its way into our diet.   At one point it was so prevalent in our lives that our son felt the need to add “God Bless Trader Joe’s” to our nightly pre-dinner prayers.  These words were a clear signal something needed to change.

I slowly began to eliminate convenience food from our repertoire of dinners and replace them with real, whole foods.  I started reading books by authors like Michael Pollen, who espouses a whole foods diet.  The more I read, the more I wanted to know. I began to look for a place to formally study Holistic Nutrtion.  My studies at The Wellspring School for Healing Arts offered me even more knowledge about healthy, tasty food to incorporate into my family’s diet.   While shopping for and preparing a whole foods menu means I need to be a little more organized, it also teaches our boys healthy eating habits for life.   I have learned a lot in this journey to healthier eating and I feel very passionate about sharing this knowledge with families to help them get off to a good start around food and nutrition.
